4 Most Common Dental Procedures

People often dread going to the dentist because they feel like they’ve neglected their dental health for too long and they might be reprimanded for it. Other times, they don’t know what will happen at the dentist’s office, but they suspect it will be painful.

While good oral hygiene should be practiced by everyone, it is important to remember that even if you don’t, dentists are still there to help you.

Check out some of the most common dental procedures below:

1.Dental Fillings

Cavities, also called caries, are common in all age groups, from toddlers to older adults. They start as a decayed area on the surface of a tooth and become tiny holes. A dentist can fix them by removing the decayed part of the tooth and sealing it with a dental filling.

2.Extractions

A tooth cannot be saved if a cavity has been left untreated for too long or if there is some other damage. In such cases, the affected tooth is removed in a quick surgery under local anesthesia. Wisdom teeth can cause pain and discomfort even without being damaged, and are also commonly extracted.

3.Braces & Dentures

If the word ‘braces’ brings back awkward teenage memories, you’re not alone there. Braces are prosthetic devices that gradually fix the positioning of the teeth for aesthetic or functional reasons.

If someone loses one or more of their teeth due to age or trauma, the lost teeth are substituted by dentures. Dentures can be either partial or full. The latter are also known as ‘false teeth’.

4.Teeth Whitening & Cleaning

Brushing and flossing are good, but you should also have your teeth professionally checked and cleaned every six months. This allows dentists to treat problems early and spares you from more extensive procedures.

Professional teeth whitening, usually performed once a year, gets rid of stains and leaves you with a bright smile!

There are many other procedures that dentists perform every day. If you’re experiencing a toothache or other dental issues, act now and don’t let it turn into a bigger problem.
