Busting Myths About Braces

In order to avoid developing dental problems at a later stage, dentists recommend braces to people with misaligned, crooked or crowded teeth. This is done to amend overbites, underbites, crossbites, and generally align teeth.

With more and more people wearing dental braces, there is a greater need to debunk myths about them.

Here are a few braces myths that are a 100% untrue.

Braces Are Painful:

Braces, once installed, are tightened every two weeks/month or couple of months, depending on the severity of the misalignment. This is done to reposition your teeth in the desired area. After each appointment, you may feel some discomfort, but this, in no way, is intense. This may last 24 to 48 hours.

Treatment Ends Once Braces Come Off

Dentists and orthodontists can’t stress the importance of the retention phase enough. The truth is: caring for your teeth after braces are removed is as important as caring for them while wearing braces.

This phase includes what is called the retention treatment which ensures that your newly straightened teeth stay in their proper position. For this, you may need permanent or removable retainers, along with minor corrections, to teeth positioning if need be. The key to getting perfectly straightened teeth is to follow the entire procedure from the start till the end.

Braces Don’t Allow Certain Foods To Pass

You may have been warned about the kind of foods you will have to give up while wearing braces. Truth is, you can eat pretty much everything. You simply have to avoid certain sticky and hard foods like:

  1. Caramel

  2. Biting into an apple/carrot

With a proper cleaning routine that is tailored to braces, any food morsels that may have remained stuck can easily be washed away.

Braces Are Only For Cosmetic Purposes

If anything, this is the biggest misconception about why people opt for dental braces. Even though there is no denying the practicality of cosmetic dentistry, dental braces certainly cater to needs that go beyond that.

For instance a misaligned jaw can cause overcrowding of teeth which can result in tooth decay, headaches, biting/chewing difficulties, and even earaches. Moreover, following your dentist’s advice and getting dental braces also helps prevent jaw inflammation and speech impairments.

Besides, having a better smile with straightened teeth also gives you a confidence boost.
