Why You Might Be Feeling Pain after a Root Canal

A root canal is one of the most common dental procedures there is. It’s effective for treating tooth cavities and relieving pain in your teeth. More than 15 million root canal treatments are performed annually.

It’s common for patients to feel pain for some time after surgery. It goes away after some time. However, if you continue to feel pain even after a couple of days have passed, it’s best you get in touch with a reliable dentist.

Let’s take a look at some reasons you might feel pain even after you’ve had a root canal:

An Infected Bone

You got your tooth checked and turns out everything is just fine. It’s properly sealed and the crown has not lost the filling. These are signs that the problem does not really lie with your tooth.

The bacteria might still be lingering around even after treatment. It mingles with the bone and infects it. This leads to inflammation and pain.

It will take some time but your body will eventually get rid of the bacteria on its own. You can ask your doctor to prescribe you antibiotics in order to accelerate the healing process.

Air Forcing Through the Root Tip

Sometimes dentists overfill the cavity because of which some of the filling oozes out through the tip. The excess filling might cause pain. Sometimes a small bubble of air might force its way through the filling and lead to pressure and pain.

Oversized Crown

An oversized crown hits the opposite tooth with a lot more force. This might result in pain. A dentist will be able to fix this issue in no time. They will adjust the crown accordingly and remove the high spot. After some time the pain will go away.

Root Canal Might Be Infected

Did you know that root canals can get infected as well? This happens when the bacteria in your saliva comes in contact with the edge of the filling. Once a bacterium finds its way inside the filling, it infects the root canal and leads to pain.

Sodium Hypochlorite Leak

During the treatment, dentists wash your tooth using Sodium Hypochlorite. This solution kills bacteria and resolves the nerve tissue. Sometimes this solution leaks from the tip. This might be the reason you are feeling pain.

In order to fix this issue the dentist will flush the affected site around the tooth. They will also recommend you painkillers and antibiotics to deal with this issue.
