What to Expect During Your First Root Canal Extraction

A root canal’s reputation for being extremely painful precedes it, but it isn’t actually all that painful and is in fact a very common procedure. If you are nervous about undergoing a root canal extraction, familiarizing yourself with what it is and how it works could help take away some of that nervousness.

What is It?

A root canal, sometimes known as an endodontic treatment, involves removal of the soft center of the tooth, called pulp, that consists of blood vessels, connective tissue and nerves.

Why Do I Need One?

Infection, inflammation and injuries to the pulp can be caused by the severe decay of a cavity, a cracked tooth, or an injury to the tooth itself. When your dentist finds these issues, removing the pulp can sometimes be the only way to save the affected tooth.

What Happens in A Root Canal Extraction

The process of a root canal extraction is discussed below:

1.Anesthesia

Using a spray or cream, the area around the affected tooth is numbed, after which the dentist will inject an anesthetic into your gum. You’ll feel the pinch of the syringe, but once it takes effect, the anesthesia will prevent you from feeling any further pain.

2.Pulp Removal

The dentist will then make use of a tiny drill to create an opening in the tooth. They’ll remove all of the diseased pulp through this opening with the help of surgical tools known as files.

3.Antibiotics & Sealing the Tooth

After removing the pulp, an antibiotic will be applied to keep the infection from recurring. After disinfection, the inside of the tooth will be filled and sealed with a special material called gutta-percha.

4.Filling the Tooth

The opening made in the tooth will be temporarily filled with a soft material. The dentist will schedule you for another visit soon to apply permanent filling. You can also have an artificial tooth, called a crown, permanently placed for resemblance to your real teeth.

It could feel odd initially, but you’ll soon get used to the feeling of the treated tooth.
