Three Tips for Recovering from Wisdom Tooth Removal

Did you know over ten million wisdom teeth are extracted from nearly 5 million people in the US annually? This fact is enough to understand the need for this dental treatment.

There comes a time in every person’s life when their wisdom teeth begin to cause pain. This is because your mouth cannot accommodate the rapidly increasing growth when these third molars start to make their way through.

Wisdom tooth extraction is a common procedure to remove wisdom teeth once and for all. Not getting them removed in time can cause damage to the other teeth and lead to gum disease if left untreated.

Though a general and straightforward procedure, it can swell your mouth and hurt afterward. Here are some post-operative care tips for wisdom tooth extractions:

Extra Care Right After the Surgery

As soon as your wisdom tooth extraction is over, you need to ensure that you place the gauze pad over the operated area for about 15 to 20 minutes. After that, you may place ice packs on the area, as need be.

You should avoid disturbing the operated area, smoking, or drinking anything carbonated immediately after the procedure. Moreover, avoid vigorous mouth rinsing.

Control Bleeding With Surgical Gauze

A certain amount of bleeding is expected, so don’t be alarmed by it. Know that slight bleeding or reddish saliva is common. If it gets excessive over time, rinse your mouth of any old blood clots thoroughly, then place a gauze pad inside it. Bite it for around half an hour, as it’ll soak up the blood.

If necessary, you may also use a wet tea bag instead of a gauze pad. The tannic acid present in tea can prevent blood clots from forming.

Stay Hydrated Post Surgery

Ensure you drink plenty of liquids post-surgery; aim to have over six glasses of water daily. Avoid using straws, though, as they can dislodge blood clots around your surgical areas. Moreover, eat foods rich in protein, and don’t skip meals.
