Dentures vs. Dental Implants

If you are looking to get a tooth or teeth replaced, you have several options. Out of those, two very popular options are dentures and dental implants. Both these methods are being practiced all around the world in a safe manner.

Let’s have a look at both of them, and how they compare.

Dentures

Dentures are removable artificial teeth that can be fitted in your mouth no matter how much bone you have left. Dentures can be entire sets that replace all teeth on both the lower and the upper jaws, or they can be partial dentures that just replace some missing teeth.

Your dentist will examine the posture of your lower and upper jaw before constructing your dentures to ensure that the size of the dentures allows for proper eating and speech. After that, your dentist will receive a preliminary pair of dentures from a lab. Before a final version of dentures is fitted to your mouth, any necessary modifications to the orientation or size of your teeth will be done.

Dentures are intended to resemble real gums and teeth, and they are bonded to your gums using a specific sort of glue.

Pros of Dentures:

  • Costs less compared to implants.

  • Patients who have lost bone and gum tissue can benefit from dentures

  • Can be made in a short time

  • A non-invasive procedure, meaning there won’t be any surgery required.

Cons of Dentures

  • May require modifications due to natural changes of your teeth and jaw with time

  • Difficulty in eating and speaking at the start

  • Infections can emerge if not properly cleaned daily.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are more of a permanent, non-removable solution to missing teeth, which have grown pretty common lately. After removing a damaged root, the doctor will drill a hole in your gums. Inside that hole, a metal root is placed, which is called a post. The post is fit to get a tooth fitted on top of it, known as the crown.

It can take some time for the bone to grow around the root, and the crown is only placed after the root is surrounded by the bone and firmly fitted.

Pros of Dental Implants:

  • Long-lasting

  • The high success rate of the procedure

  • Easy to care for

  • Will adjust to your face structure accordingly, since they are implanted in the bone

Cons of Dental Implants

  • Is more expensive than dentures

  • Not everyone can get dental implants since it requires a certain amount of bone left

  • Is an invasive procedure, surgery is necessary for digging the hole for the post
