7 Effective Tips to Recover From Wisdom Tooth Removal

Even though wisdom teeth removal may be inevitable; the pain that you feel after the extraction doesn’t have to be.

 

Every year, dentists all across the United States extract millions of wisdom teeth as per the Academy of General Dentistry.

 

Almost everyone who has had a wisdom tooth removed complains about the pain after extraction. But what people don’t know is that there are plenty of simple things they can do to ease their pain. Compiled below are 7 tips to recover from wisdom teeth removal.

 

1. Keep Your Head Elevated:

The worst thing that you can do after surgery is to apply pressure to your jaw. As the wisdom tooth has been removed, the area is sensitive.

 

Thus, it is recommended to keep your head elevated after surgery. You can do this by using multiple pillows when going to bed to make sure that no blood rushes to the jaw.

 

2. Take it Easy:

Once your wisdom tooth has been removed, it may result in your face getting swollen. People have also reported feeling numb after surgery so it’s a good idea not to overexert yourself at work. Moreover, the best course of action would be to take a day off, and rest.

 

3. Put Some Ice On It:

After surgery, dentists recommend to ice the area. The best way to do this is to get an ice pack from a supermarket, and applying it to the cheek closest to the gum where the wisdom tooth was removed.

 

4. Avoid the Formation of a Dry Socket:

A dry socket (alveolar osteitis) is one of the most commonly reported consequences of wisdom tooth removal. It can be extremely painful.

 

We recommend giving up smoking for at least 24 hours after surgery. Similarly, fizzy drinks and sodas should also be avoided.

 

5. Brush Gently:

While it’s always a good idea to be thorough when brushing your teeth, you should be gentle when brushing your teeth after wisdom teeth extraction. As your gums haven’t healed from the ordeal, rough brush strokes can aggravate your pain—while brushing; be gentle!

 

6. Take Pain Medication:

If you feel that the pain is getting out of hand, take some pain medication like ibuprofen. We highly recommend getting them approved from your dentist beforehand in order to avoid possible complications.
